This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. I picked up a Downy Woodpecker, an every-day visitor. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. The window silhouettes were gone.

When we were at anchor here for the first time, I headed to shore, in search of the new group of Mexican birds that I had long dreamed of. We later saw another group of 19, and finally a distant flock of 52. A Mangrove Rail called continuously for about twenty minutes from within the protective cover of the mangrove. A group of dead but still standing trees… a pecker… an Acorn Woodpecker … one more… and a few more… about ten Acorn Woodpeckers!! Acorn Woodpeckers by Niklas Aronsson. There were no clear signs indicating the beginning or the end of the park; it was a very small city park made up of araucaria trees that have not been destroyed and are now protected. After filling our water bottles at the clear mountain spring, the group splits and the majority continue on foot across the high pass to find many signs of bear presence in the area – scratching posts, scat (above), footprints; while the two of us continue by car along the very good final section of macadam prior to the village. Puerto Escondido is a small protected harbor that caters to transient boats, both fishing as well as sailboats. A good portion though is agricultural and so the chance for a new group of birds is there. As we begin traveling north up the Baja, our first stop on February 1st will be Puerto Escondido.
