Lewis's Woodpecker in New York State

Summer Birding at Conboy Lake NWR

Although the refuge was established in 1964 in part to protect crane habitat, a pair did not return until 1972, and the first nests were observed in 1976. There were several conspicuous groups of Hairy Woodpeckers, including this female. By early July, there was not even the hint of a lake. The Conboy Lake CCP is here.

Guide to birding the Forgotten Road in the Djerdap National Park, Serbia

There were two cars used by project participants, and I, the only birder in the group, drove the first car. This was the first geological site protected in the Djerdap area, formed along a fault by incision of the Boljetinska River into the sedimentary rocks. Middle and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers were mostly in lower, oak sections.
