Baby Bird Identification: A North American Guide–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

I am puzzled as to why Gulls and Terns are almost passed over, with less than two pages of text devoted to a family description and only six species accounts (four gulls, two terns). Family follows family with no page break, making this section a little dense. Woodpeckers are a family of focus for Tuttle-Adams.

Broome’s Poinciana trees

10,000 Birds

Magpie-larks collect “mud” from our garden where the water we provide for the birds overflows. As the Poinciana trees lost their leaves we suddenly “lost” our family of Tawny Frogmouths. We were very pleased to find the Tawny Frogmouth family had not relocated too far! They build their nests out of mud.

10,000 Birds

However, the lockdown forces me to go deeper and deeper into my photo collection, if I want to write anything at all. If you are in a cooperative mood, you may acknowledge the small “mane” of the male on the right side of the photo below. Bird Families of the World by Winkler, Billerman and Lovette

10,000 Birds

There is a thing parents know very well – how important it is to choose the right name for a child. Presented in numbers, Bird Families of the World has 2417 field guide style paintings, plus 797 bird photos, followed by 252 distribution maps. But why am I even interested in bird families in the first place? Families perhaps?
