It is a bit of an outsider in the bulbul family, being only one of two bulbuls in the genus Spizixos (“chirping bulbul” – a bit strange as many other bulbuls including the omnipresent Light-vented Bulbul also chirp a lot). The Collared Finchbill is a bulbul, even though the name does not state this directly.

Magpie-larks collect “mud” from our garden where the water we provide for the birds overflows. As the Poinciana trees lost their leaves we suddenly “lost” our family of Tawny Frogmouths. We were very pleased to find the Tawny Frogmouth family had not relocated too far! They build their nests out of mud.

Two weeks ago the Pied Oystercatcher family had moved north to an area with closer proximity to the reef and more bivalves in the inter-tidal zone. When the tide is out and the area where the small bivalves are is exposed the family move forward to feed together.
