Anytime I’m shopping in a good local beer shop, I’m always sure to look for any offerings from Collective Arts Brewing. Not only does the Hamilton, Ontario brewery make some great beer, but – as the name suggests – Collective Arts is an enthusiastic supporter of creativity outside of the brewing arts – namely music and visual arts.

Collective Arts: Stranger than Fiction

Truth be told, I picked up this week’s beer long before we embarked on this surreal “three-hour tour” we are now collectively enduring. The packaging artwork has changed – last year it was a fluid, thickly-textured portrait of a Eurasian Eagle-Owl ( Bubo bubo ) – but I think the recipe has remained the same.

Cyprus Delights – Part III

Give it a few more years and there’s a good chance that it will be split into a full species, just like the Cyprus Scops Owl. A Jay of the endemic Cypriot race glaszneri It was in the Botanical Gardens, too, that I watched Red-rumped Swallows collecting mud for their nests ( below ). Now that would have been a good bird to see.

Finding birds in Deliblato Sands, part 3/3: along the eastern edge of the reserve

Since no-one lives here, there is no organised rubbish collecting. Birds of prey include European Honey-buzzard , Long-legged Buzzard , Short-toed Eagle , Booted Eagle , Montagu’s Harrier , etc. The Danube being 3 km wide here has another, sad consequence: all floating rubbish is being wind-blown to this bank.
