Australian White Ibis are one of three Ibis species that we observe here in Broome. They birds are affectionately called Bin Chickens due to their attraction to discarded items. They are regularly observed at the Poo Ponds and also along the coast and the local parks.

Traveling the rural Maharashtra on previous days, every village had its share of small, slim and long-legged domestic chickens crossing in front of us, not unlike this wild cousin at all. Nowhere in India have I seen broiler horror-chicken like those sold in supermarkets back home. The morning is cold, much colder than we expected.

In the high part of Ajanaco we could watch Giant Hummingbird , Creamy-crested Spintail (an endemic specie), Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch , and by Pillahuata we could watch Chesnut-bellied Mountain Tanager , Band-tailed and Barred Fruiteaters , Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan. This lek and its observation blind are famous among birders.

Travel to Tiquicia for birding is high on the list of most birders because it’s not too far from Canada or the USA, there is good tourism infrastructure, and most of all, it’s pretty easy to see hundreds of eye-catching bird species. Along with two clients, while calmly enjoying a fantastic natural show of two oropendola species, wood-rails, other birds, and the miniature antics of an A merican Pygmy-Kingfisher , the general calm was disrupted by the distinct screeches and alarm calls of small birds. The rails did indeed come to investigate but came up empty-beaked.

And as Ron Dudley shows, it goes beyond live mice, as he documented a whole chicken being left out by someone to attract raptors. At least a chicken would last awhile as a feeder. I think the main thing for me, leaving aside the debate on invasive species and the birds welfare, is that it just feels like cheating.

To go by the numbers, I saw 79 species of bird while in Washington (150 county ticks), 21 of which were year birds and 8 of which were lifers. Ditto for the Blackbird Bakery on Bainbridge Island, Fins Coastal Cuisine in Port Townsend, and Ezell’s Chicken in Seattle. The Lucky Diner on First Avenue in Seattle has delicious food.
