There are some pretty cool tropical forests in Tiquicia (a local name for Costa Rica) and that’s where you need to go to see most of the bird species. Although it looks sort of like an exotic grebe, this fine, funny bird is in the Finfoot family. Such a nice, pink legged chicken, er, Gray-necked Wood-Rail.

Travel to Tiquicia for birding is high on the list of most birders because it’s not too far from Canada or the USA, there is good tourism infrastructure, and most of all, it’s pretty easy to see hundreds of eye-catching bird species. Watch that one and keep an eye on the others because all sorts of species can show at any time.

We had a blast, the family and I, and experienced some amazing natural places, to say nothing of the fine city of Seattle. To go by the numbers, I saw 79 species of bird while in Washington (150 county ticks), 21 of which were year birds and 8 of which were lifers. Here I am, back from my first ever visit to the Pacific Northwest.

SUPER STARLINGS Tanzania plays host to a wide variety of Starlings, over twenty species in fact. Getting a glimpse into the workings of the world by witnessing a family of starlings foraging together is a real treat. The scene is immediately more familiar to me, a starling working on a chicken wing in the parking lot.

However, there are a few stand out sites here and there that are significantly better for species like Jabiru, Lance-tailed Manakin, and Nicaraguan Grackle to name a few. BUT, we did see lots of other nice birds, most of them bonus species tough to see elsewhere in Costa Rica. This ain’t the wren.

On a trip to Suriname to find and film some of these spectacular species I was blown away by the birding. Suriname has approximately 735 recorded species, with many more to still be added to its total list. Sharks cruise off the city’s beaches, and just yesterday a deadly species of snake was found in a suburban railway station. The chicks, which were about the size of chickens, had brown and fawn striped plumage reminding me of the colours of young wild boars. The family on a peaceful moment. Check out those claws!

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. There are quite a few raptor species around Skukuza. Most likely, the devil, not god created this species. While some bustards are the largest bird species capable of flight, the Black-bellied Bustard is only mid-sized. Skukuza is the largest camp and the administrative center of Kruger Park. Consistency is overrated.

In the time we spent on Culebra I saw 49 species of birds, not bad for an island outside of the wintering grounds for most neotropical migrants and only measuring eleven miles square. If you go to Culebra you will be astounded at the sheer number of outdoor cats and chickens. I spotted eight species in my time on Culebra.

They are part of a family of New World Quail which includes Gambel’s, Mountain, Scaled and Montezuma Quail, as well as the Northern Bobwhite. This is a rather photographer-friendly species, staying on the same branch for quite a while and even returning to it after catching some insects – you can see this on video here and here. While the source does not say so directly, it hints that this means the species is not as intelligent as Eurasian Magpies (which pass the test).
