Having observed the Cattle Egret in breeding plumage at the Derby Poo Ponds on June 19th we found ourselves at Windjana Gorge first thing the following morning. This actually benefits our local wildlife, because the rainwater then gets trapped in the borrow pit and in some instances it will sustain the wildlife right through our dry months when there is no rainfall at all. The borrow pit has one deep section of water and it is popular with Australasian Grebes.

The house is a four bedroom, four bath two story, with a deck running around three sides of the upper story, great for wildlife viewing. The mighty rhino along with the Cattle Egret. In the same first day plus a couple of hours, my Africa bird count is at 66 species. This will act as our base for the next 20 days.

ForestPuffin was targeting this species as it is very habitat dependent and, unbeknownst to me, such habitat exists within a big stone’s throw of my house. During this time the chrysalis is constantly attended by the ants and it is thought unlikely that the species would be able to survive without the ants’ ministration.
