I wish I could count the uncharacteristically confiding Sunbittern at the Toronto Zoo, but that species continues to elude me in its natural range. The consolation prize was spotting Toronto Blue Jays –both the birds and the baseball players–during my first trip to Canada in far too long.

Despite my best efforts and despite seeing around 200 Canada Geese , I had no luck with the Specklebelly. I saw lots of Canada Geese – about 450 – but no Greater White-fronted Goose. After all, birding under a highway is not exactly my idea of a pleasant experience. The morning wasn’t a total loss though.

Peter Thoem settled in Canada many years ago. Instead I found a direct flight from Canada to Malaga from where I could travel anywhere along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, east or west of the Rock of Gibraltar. He lives at the west end of Lake Ontario which, twelve months of the year, is a very rich and varied place for birds.

Good field guides to bird sounds are certainly available, particularly Nathan Pieplow’s for eastern and western North America.) It is written in English, mostly, or a form of English anyway, and on first encounter the book and its language is weird, intriguing, puzzling, and beautiful in a way outside the normal realm of experience.

The story is etched into my memory not for my experience with the bird, which was an obstructed view of a singing male through a mess of dense underbrush at about 100 feet, but for the effort it took to get there.
