The Tiger Shrike is making a bit more of an effort already. The female is optimized for inconspicuous breeding, not for pop stardom.

The area is known for being a breeding area of the enigmatic Rufous Crab-Hawk and it was the first place I saw the species, many years ago. On our journey back, we tried again by a couple forested bridges for any glimpse of a Rufescent Tiger-Heron , but no luck on that front. Rufous Crab-Hawk. Maybe another time. Such is birding.

I have long thought that the Cape May Warbler should have its common name changed to match its scientific name, Setophaga tigrina , because “ Tiger Warbler ” is a much cooler name. It breeds across Canada’s boreal forest and most winter in the Caribbean, though some spend the cold months in Central America.

It is kind of rare to see a Fairy Pitta during Shanghai’s spring migration as those passing through are all adults rather than inexperienced chicks, and they are in a rush getting to their breeding grounds – but I was lucky. This should not be a problem in Shanghai as the pitta has not been reported to breed here.

Apparently, when breeding, the two parents divide incubation duties, with one bird taking over the daytime duties and another one the nighttime. Tiphys died either of a snakebite or of a mysterious illness but he was not killed by either a tiger or a rhinoceros. At between 4 pm and 6 pm, to be exact. Lucky him, right?

In Singapore, Common Redshanks mostly drink Tiger Beer. The story is similar for the Red-breasted Parakeet – native and Near Threatened in Thailand and surrounding countries, but with an established breeding population in Singapore, quite likely established from escapees. I agree that the throat is white.

I’ve observed quite a few female wood-warblers messing about with nesting material while they are on migration, even in areas where they don’t breed. Whatever the cause, it is cool to see a female Cape May Warbler even if she anywhere near as stripey as her tiger-like male counterpart.

The third shrike seen in Shanghai this month was the Tiger Shrike. For Pacific Golden Plovers , the situation is similar – in one study , males showed strong breeding ground fidelity, with 100% (8 of 8 birds) returning to a site in Western Alaska while only one of 4 females (25%) returned.
