Fully fledged Pied Oystercatcher chick

The defining features that identify it from the parents are the grey legs and the black bill tip. The fully fledged Pied Oystercatcher chick is the bird on the right. Non-breeding Pied Oystercatchers join flocks either to the north or south of Gantheaume Point. They do not attempt to breed for about seven years.

Horrible Hybrids

Looks like a scaup of some sort, but it’s not quite right My bird certainly had the peaked crown characteristic of a Lesser Scaup; the feathers on its head looked black at a distance, while closer inspection revealed a purple sheen. Lesser Scaup has only a slight black tip to the beak, while this bird had a clear black band.
