The best birding season here is the winter when waterbirds come to overwinter in those lagoons, followed by migratory seasons and, to a lesser extent, breeding season. I recorded the song, which Merlin app identified as a Skylark’s, but I had enough experience to know better: it turned out to be a Greater Short-toed Lark.

On a second visit I spotted a fishing boat going east along the channel followed by over a hundred gulls and terns, including over 40 Black Terns. I love American Avocets and I rarely see them in such marvelous breeding plumage, so I was in heaven. These were winter birds, due to fly north any day. Clapper Rail. Back to the Flats.

In the non-breeding season, male Baya Weavers sometimes enter the basket-making trade, often with considerable success. Meanwhile, the females seem to have a much more relaxing life, at least in this early stage of the breeding season. You can see why here. My cats refuse to even try Fiery Minivets. I am within one of Florida’s sub-tropical zones, and my birding experiences have expanded, with life birds galore. The first shorebird I saw was a Willet , already transitioning out of its breeding plumage and feeding with the gulls along the surf. Almost every lunch break I head out onto the beach, looking for birds along the sand.

It was made a National Park in the 1980s and is a major breeding and nesting area for over 30,000 seabirds. These mangroves function as a sanctuary for fish and other animals that then make their way as adults across the channel to the coral reefs that surround the island. The birds are not allowed to breed on the runway, but many loaf around on it. Around 100,000 of these terns breed on almost every available space on the island, and walking through groups of them is a deafening and quite painful experience. Bigger than an Empidonax flycatcher and smaller than a Myiarchus , the Eastern Phoebe is usually only mistaken for a pewee, and even that becomes unlikely with experience. Black Phoebes eat bugs with the same gusto as any other flycatcher, but will also go after tiny fish.

Or maybe, after my experiences with the Scott’s Oriole in Union Square earlier that year, the Tanager just seemed unconfiding and hard to see. I didn’t have my binoculars, but it didn’t take long to suss out that it was a bright, shiny breeding-plumaged male Western Tanager. And that, that was exciting.

The park is home to not one, not two, but large three colonies of breeding seabirds: the Brown Noddy , Magnificent Frigatebird , and Sooty Tern. No, that was not a typo, the Sooty Terns fly non-stop for an average of five years before they return to the Dry Tortugas to breed. Lots and lots of birds. Each took merely a minute or two.

The good side of this popularity is presence of restaurants and inns (from personal experience I can recommend a place for carnivores called Vodopad – By the waterfall). Forest covers 70% of the area (hornbeam, beech and oak). Use the Zrenjanin road to reach the area.
