As soon as I looked at it more closely it was quite clear that it wasn’t a scaup of any species, despite its resemblance to a North American Lesser Scaup. I hadn’t considered the possible parentage more than the two probable species involved, but intriguingly a Pochard drake x Tufted duck looks quite different.

There was a Gartered Trogon right above me, and one cooperative Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth on a cecropia tree, raising its head to smile at us. Young birds, at least in captivity, become mature after 5 years and start breeding after 6 or 7 years. Next goal: 1100 species, to cover about 10% of the total.

Global Big Day has become an annual collective event in May that encourages thousands of people to watch birds on the same date. and ended later that eveing with a final total of 154 species. As far as promoting birding goes, the only thing better might be October Gobal Big Day ! Speckled Tanager was one of those birds.
