Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of June 2021)

June is the breeding month, when New Yorkers mostly give up on migrant birds and look for birds where they nest. I was especially pleased that a Virginia Rail (pictured above) was hanging out by a puddle right at the edge of the road when I arrived. We’re sending a team to collect his recently revoked birder card posthaste.

Strictly speaking, they were always forbidden for driving, but there is a difference between me, driving along the very top of the dyke and collecting scientific data for the first national breeding birds atlas and someone exploring the possibilities of his flashy new 4×4 while driving figures of eight along the embankment slopes.

Horrible Hybrids

Looks like a scaup of some sort, but it’s not quite right My bird certainly had the peaked crown characteristic of a Lesser Scaup; the feathers on its head looked black at a distance, while closer inspection revealed a purple sheen. I’ve seen some weird-looking hybrids in duck collections. My hunch was Tufted Duck x Pochard.

Broome’s Poinciana trees

The nest in the header photo in a Poinciana tree belongs to a Little Friarbird and they have been breeding recently and there are many juvenile birds about. The Magpie-larks have also been breeding recently and also using the Poinciana trees for nesting. They also offer an excellent opportunity for birds to nest. Magpie-lark nest.

However, the lockdown forces me to go deeper and deeper into my photo collection, if I want to write anything at all. Contrary to alleged preferences among humans, the golden-headed cisticola has a shorter tail during the breeding season ( source ). It breeds in tree holes, presumably explaining the more commonly used name for it.

With birds, this happens when one takes prey or other food caught or collected by another. Instead of hovering, some gulls have set up territories within breeding colonies of Humboldt seabirds. The Gull lands and assesses the situation waiting for the right time. Kleptoparasitismis is a word that just means parasitism by theft.
