You Work with What You’ve Got

I saw 32 species here in my first 24 hours, some of them exciting ones. My second lifer this trip was a migratory Yellow-throated Warbler , a species I could not hope to see my previous trip, which had occurred in early summer. We were happy to experience three birds of prey on this jaunt.

Its mood is not helped by the ambiguous review on eBird: “Although not actually pale, this brownish songbird is one of the plainer thrushes in its range” The Latin species name of the Dusky Thrush is eunomos (I guess that is Greek, but whatever) – meaning well-ordered. They also eat more when together with other people.

And my decision to take this as a learning experience led to some interesting conclusions — and even some pretty cool birds. Great clouds of Blackbirds and Cowbirds , with a high percentage of Yellow-headed Blackbirds ? But in flight, and high in the reeds, Yellow-headed Blackbirds come to the fore. But so worth it!

Yes, we do have warm, tropical weather and a fancy assortment of resident and wintering species. Nor is there any trudging through snow in search of extra hardy species or visits to feeders with the hope of finding a grackle or Red-winged Blackbird that failed to fly south. Hawking for Nighthawks

Especially as we were at the time about to experience a rapidly advancing tropical storm. Two species of icterids populated the area, the presence of either was a direct indicator of the degree of water present. Red-breasted Meadowlarks controlled the drier sections while Yellow-hooded Blackbirds occupied the more flooded areas.
