An American Redstart sang half-heartedly, a Ring-necked Pheasant ran from me, and Gray Catbirds , Red-winged Blackbirds , and American Robins were everywhere. Once I was done at the beach I explored some of the little remaining undeveloped scrub habitat that has grown up behind the beach and the boardwalk, just to see what I could find.

Less than two weeks later a Yellow-headed Blackbird was found at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park and the first day’s attempts at refinding it mostly failed and I didn’t see it. Yellow-headed Blackbird is a gorgeous bird with a horrible voice. Two-for-four. It was found again the next day and this time I got it.

The star of such huge concentrations is the massive Jabiru , towering over a diverse collection of South American waterbirds such as Sunbittern , Plumbeous Ibis , and Southern Screamer. Scarlet-headed Blackbird glows in the morning light.

There were Black Phoebes hawking insects around the ponds … Ruby-crowned Kinglets foraging in the trees… and a male Bushtit collecting nesting material. The ranch’s ponds yielded several Ring-necked Ducks … large numbers of American Wigeon … several Bufflehead … and Pied-billed Grebes. Fun birding!

A pair of hoopoe (Wiedenhoppe) porcelain figurines produced in the early eighteenth century by the Meissen Manufactury from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It all seemed too fantastical to be true. Of course, hoopoes do exist, though I’ve yet to see a real one myself.

Yellow-headed Blackbirds singing in the reeds allowed us to get an arm’s length away. Yellow-headed Blackbird was another lifer for me, and omnipresent. Wilson’s Phalaropes did their crazy spinning thing, to our collective amusement. A Marsh Wren came out of hiding for us. The best, in my opinion, was saved for last.

It is always hard to grasp the actual size of a bird until you literally have it in your hand and we collected the specimen and gave it to the Spurn Bird Observatory for their records. Following the drizzly and windy weather we ventured out along the coastal path and sadly came across a recently deceased Meadow Pipit.

We observed the bird on the Zapata Peninsula, first feeding on a flowering tree off of a road where we also observed Fernandina’s Flicker and Red-shouldered Blackbirds, and later in the garden of a lovely lady who has turned her backyard into a paradise of feeders and bird-friendly plants.

A schoolboy egg collection and a house near the sea, as well as a childhood that allowed me to become acquainted with almost every nook and cranny for 4km in any direction. A twice-weekly trip allowed me long afternoons digging for worms and watching the local Robin and Blackbird devour them a few yards away.

At one occasion, during the hike Tsanakis collected wild mushrooms and in a restaurant, asked the chef to prepare those for us. Blackbird – Turdus merula. The bear walks are relatively easy and, while possible in sneakers, some light ankle-support hiking shoes might be preferable. Also, trekking poles proved useful.

This is more than clear from the data they wish to collect, which emphasizes waterfowl over shorebirds, and seems to completely ignore the other birds that occur around bodies of water. (It I was very pleased to see several Brewer’s Blackbirds mixed in with a large group of Brown-headed Cowbirds and Yellow-headed Blackbirds.

Masked Lapwings are often seen close to Foster and also Common Blackbirds , Common Mynas , Common Starlings , Red Wattlebirds , Straw-necked Ibis , Spotted Doves , Galahs and Little Corellas. One of the most common birds that I have encountered is the Eastern Yellow Robin.

So, the birds start collecting mud and small sticks. When juvenile Chinese Blackbirds want to get an alcoholic drink at a bar, they usually blacken their yellow gape flanges in order to look older. As with Chinese male humans, having your own building is still vital to raising young. Nest building: a good activity for a rainy day.
