Once I was fully vaccinated and air travel became an option, I looked for a location for my first birding trip since 2019. I settled on Wisconsin, which is home to one of the Top 25 NWRs for Birding that I have not visited: Horicon NWR. So my criteria were as much about birding locations as they were about birds.

On BirdTrack, the British equivalent of e-Bird, the list of birds provided does allow for Tufted Duck x Ferruginous Duck to be recorded, but not Tufted Duck x Pochard. However, there had been reports of a Scaup mixed in with the flock, which at first glance I thought this bird might be. My hunch was Tufted Duck x Pochard.

When I photographed a pair a couple of years ago that were sporting radio tags , I assumed (and it may be the case) that they were two birds of twenty tagged that year in Virginia. I returned the next day and found that the birds were still there.

Corey’s best bird of the weekend was a male Long-tailed Duck in breeding plumage off the coast of Queens. I took Ivy to feed the birds up at Irondequoit Bay and observed this small goose. My guess is that, not diminutive enough to be a Cackling Goose , it is a Lesser Canada Goose. Do you agree? Do you agree?
