Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. The main attraction for birders here are the hornbills – I have written about them before , so this post will be more on the other birds I saw there in 2017. One road simply ends here, giving the place a real end-of-the-world feeling.

The main reason for visiting this site is the White-throated Dipper and soon, one cooperative bird shows itself on a rock protruding from the water. I spot a head of a bird, itself hidden behind a rock in a deep shadow of the lush vegetation at the water’s edge and keep my binoculars focused while waiting patiently. Old plum orchard.

Other reminders of December in Costa Rica are palm trees festooned with Christmas lights, an abundance of annual bird counts, and sightings of winter birds like gulls, ducks, and a scattering of Yellow-rumped Warblers. Personally, I had a year accompanied by a blend of changes and birds. It has been good, I am grateful!

Tropical Cyclone Anika became a rain bearing depression over the past week. There was no blue sky, but there were plenty of birds feeding on the reef. Not sure that I impressed them, I chose to bluff them and looked left and right for a suitable tree branch to pick. At some stage, a salmon-hunting bear at a shingle beach came too close, mere 9 steps. Attempting to bluff the bear in believing that they were even bigger bears, Hoshino suggested raising their hands, to appear taller.

The tracks of two young Polar Bear skirt a crack in the sea ice in Admiralty Inlet. Wildlife concentrates at the Floe Edge, and although we just missed Narwhal as pack ice moved in just after we arrived, the place was littered with Polar Bear. Still, with that many bear you have to stay vigilant. Glaucous Gull.

Beside birds, in this park you stand a chance of spotting the Eurasian Lynx , Brown Bear and Gray Wolf ! It is possible to reach it on the Friday afternoon, sleep there and go birding at the crack of dawn on Saturday. Well, do you really? The Forgotten Road does not exist on the GPS screen either. I would love to know how the order spread across these regions, since that spread must have involved either crossing oceans or the frigid regions that these birds avoid. Once you reach Coconut Wells the road bears to your right and just as the bitumen ends you take a left turn towards the beach.
