Fur and Fangs rather than Feathers and Beaks

10,000 Birds

Memorable encounters with Mammals: Part I Most birdwatchers enjoy seeing mammals, but the trouble with mammals is that they tend to be much more challenging to see than birds. I remember the guide on my first Kenyan birding safari remarking that “birding groups always see far more mammals than those who come just to see animals.

Birds of the Northern Forest – An homage

10,000 Birds

It seemed to draw you in and I could easily imagine standing beside him, staring as he did at the bird, watching it curve its neck downwards. The title read “Birds of the Northern Forest”, paintings by J.F. Livingston, and on the dust jacket was a drawing of three Pine Grosbeaks ( Pinicola enucleator ) standing on a cone-bearing tree.

Birding Shanghai in March 2022

10,000 Birds

Strangely, one of the easiest birds to see on Chongming recently is the non-native Black Swan. According to an article in the Guardian , “nearly a quarter of black swan families are parented by homosexual couples, the males sometimes mating with a female simply to have a chick. Homophobia? I thought I needed to mention this.

Birding Ruoergai, Sichuan, China

10,000 Birds

The poster bird of this area is the near-threatened Black-necked Crane. Not sure how I (or the bird itself) feel about the bird being named after a bird collector, though. A beautiful bird, but a disastrous name, if even some of the accusations against Przevalski of him being a massive racist are true.
