They also remind me why I love birding in Michoacán. The Trogon family (and order, since the order only includes one family) is quite widespread, being found in all the tropical (and some subtropical) regions of the world. Both are large, stocky birds, with a large head and long, squared-off tail. Those are good numbers.

As our Gypsy comes to a halt, one Oriental Honey Buzzard is investigating the new arrivals. There’s a Sloth Bear in tall, dry grass, barely 50 metres from us, but all we can see is a dark, shape-shifting shadow that eventually becomes all but invisible. Finally, the shores of the Telia lie in front of us. The Telia Lake.

Once you reach Coconut Wells the road bears to your right and just as the bitumen ends you take a left turn towards the beach. There’s not always any rhyme or reason to the appearances birds make on beer labels, which makes finding the unexpected ones almost as exciting – for me, at least – as any birding tick.
