Oriental Scops Owls are quite possibly my favorite bird at Nanhui. Bird-shaped cuteness. Estren said that humans should be mindful of their bias for cute animals, so animals that would not be considered cute are also valued in addition to cute animals. Sukau birding essentially means staying in a more-or-less comfortable lodge on the banks of the Kinatabagan river, and taking boat tours on more-or-less rickety boats on the river. Mkuze Game Reserve is in the Eastern part of South Africa, about 5 hours away from Johannesburg, and one of the best places I have ever been to for bird photography. At some point, I almost convinced myself that it would be a good idea to publish a coffee table photo book just showing Red-billed Oxpecker on various animals.

I stopped and watched it for a minute and saw a bird land by it, not trying to hurt it or something but just felt like landing in front of it I guess. The turtle didn't speed up or go the opposite direction, it just kept slowly crawling, getting right up close to the bird, who didn't even seem to pay it any mind as it passed.

My landlord and I found this bird on the ground unable to fly. When it lands, it's right wing always lays extended, though it's able to bring the wing close to its body when we pick it up. Is it just a chick, or closer to a fully grown bird? We were worried about it's eyes when we took a look at them, is this normal?
