Not enough Woodpeckers

10,000 Birds

It is hard to imagine any birder not liking woodpeckers – they are the “motherhood and apple pie” of the avian world. The Bearded Woodpecker (Mkuze, South Africa) does not really look any more bearded than many other woodpeckers. It is the most widespread woodpecker in Africa, claims the HBW.

Birding the Drakensberg, South Africa

10,000 Birds

One in November 2018 included a one-day birding trip in the Drakensberg area, a mountain range in the border area between South Africa and Lesotho. For some reason that is hard for me to fathom, there is no such bird as a Cape Woodpecker. But of course, it is also nice to remember past birding trips. Nice not to be a kid, too.

Springtime in Bonn

10,000 Birds

I always love the feeling when migrants have just returned, knowing they just travelled thousands of kilometers, some from Subsaharan Africa. I spent some time sitting on the lawn and watching an Eurasian Green Woodpecker forage around me.

Wakkerstroom, South Africa: It’s a Lark

10,000 Birds

I’ve not made spectacular progress writing up my trip to Africa earlier this year, so perhaps I should get on that. So instead let’s talk about South Africa’s best kept birding secret (at least outside of the country) Wakkerstroom. The drive also got me the Mountain Wheatear and Buff-streaked Chat.
