But the Kentish Plover was sheltering its young under its body, and the Little Ringed Plover was incubating an egg — right in the middle of downtown Madrid! But… Been there, done most of those.

We had added Radjah Shelduck to our 2019 list on August 26th at the Derby Poo Ponds. The Radjah Shelduck family last week were swimming in the irrigation channel right against the road and so we could pull over and admire them. There had only been one solitary Radjah Shelduck on that occasion.

The rest area was reopened in April 2019. Brown Quail sneaking out from the right. Brown Quail wondering if it should go left or right! They erected fences and vehicular access to the river bank for camping was no longer permitted. The entire river bank is free of vehicles and nature loves it.

Birding even close to home didn’t even appeal to me, as the extra movement added to the dry heaves (pregnancy is super fun, am I right ladies?). Daily birding in my own hometown added to the joy of seeing common species in uncommon circumstances, like a Bald Eagle perched on a Destin sand dune. Not so much.

Our 2019 summer rainy season had lower-than-normal rains, and the lake is now extremely shallow. The slightly more numerous Snowy Plovers , however, will stay right here; Lago de Cuitzeo is one of the few places where this species breeds in central Mexico. But this Plover is a Snowy, and will stay right here.

We have observed the first Pied Oystercatcher chicks of 2019 over the past two weeks grow steadily. In the photo above there is one chick trying to avoid the wind under the vegetation to the right of the tail of the Pied Oystercatcher on the left. You can also see that the legs of the chicks are almost as wide as the adults!

Two new birds for 2019 just like that! It was a beautiful day and there is a camping ground right on the foreshore. Whilst observing the Southern Emu-wrens a White-fronted Chat flew into view and landed on some raised vegetation! We drove down the windy road to the Walkerville North car-park to take a walk along the beach.

But it does have a very modest hotel right by the water, which made it easy for me to bird at the break of dawn. Suffice it to say, even after five years of birding in Mexico, this trip gave me 5 lifers, 8 new life-birds for my state, and 22 year-bird species for 2019. Bathing there is definitely discouraged!
