There was a Gartered Trogon right above me, and one cooperative Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth on a cecropia tree, raising its head to smile at us. This species qualifies as Critically Endangered because extensive habitat destruction and capture for the cagebird trade are causing extremely rapid and continuing population declines.

This species is easier to find in Derby than Broome and the Derby wharf is a good place to go and observe them. The Kimberley Flycatcher had previously been a sub-species of the Lemon-bellied Flycatcher , but is now a species in its own right as of August 2019. The photo below I took in 2014 at Marlow Lagoon.

I picked out this week’s Parula Pilsner from The Warbler Brewer of Delmar, New York solely because it’s the very end of April, right around the time I generally see my first Northern Parula ( Setophaga americana ) of the year. With its striking combination of colour rings I suspected that it would be easy to find out more about this particular bird, and I was right. They are of the race islandica , a sub species of the nominate race, limosa. Rings are not the only way of marking birds, and with a number of species wing tags are more often used.

Brown Quail- Coturnix ypsilophera are a species of birds that we do often encounter around Broome, but rarely get a chance to photograph. Brown Quail are a very plump bird species and much prefer to run than fly. Brown Quail move fast and I was only able to photograph one right out in the open. Brown Quail beside the track.
