My 2013 Birding Year in Review (With My Top Ten Birding Moments!)

10,000 Birds

In 2013 I birded in two countries, submitted eBird checklists for seven U.S. At the beginning of the year I said the following about my goals for the year’s birding: I start 2013 with 297 birds on my Queens Life List , 500 birds on my ABA Life List , and 1,096 birds on my World Life List. You will not be disappointed.

Birders As Family

10,000 Birds

I just finished attending a really great conference called Focus on Diversity , The Changing Face of American Birding–which is an awesome event, (next year’s event will back up to the 2013 Rio Grande Valley Bird Festival so it would be a great way to get 2 awesome events in one trip). Have we all gone completely mental?

An afternoon in the Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

10,000 Birds

A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. This time they appear more relaxed, but nervousness might be a better policy: between 2013 and 2017, well over a thousand rhinos were annually poached in South Africa. A paper on breeding of the species was actually researched right here at Wawushan. Never fails to startle them.

10,000 Birds

Somehow I forgot that the last time I predicted what the next ten species I would see in Queens would be was back on 30 December 2013, when my list was sitting at 302. What did I predict back in December of 2013? Long-eared Owl, 3 Jul 2010, 25 Mar 2013. Good times! Eurasian Wigeon, 3 Jul 2010, 11 Apr 2011, 5 Nov 2011.

10,000 Birds

Keep your eyes to the skies for swallows… you know what they are , right? My family already boxed a bushel and look forward to much more. But nobody needs to gnaw on mealy fruit anymore now that apple season is sweeping the Northern Hemisphere.

Best Bird of the Year 2013

10,000 Birds

As 2013 draws to a close we here at 10,000 Birds thought that it would be a great idea if we, like we did in 2010 , 2011 , and 2012 , shared our Best Birds of the Year. I was attending the 3rd Global Bird-watching Conference in Gujarat and suddenly surrounded not just be species that were completely new, but entire families of birds.
