One sighting that came right on schedule for me was that of Ospreys on their nests all along the perimeter of Montezuma NWR. I don’t know about you, but after a four-day weekend, I become completely disoriented. Summer is sensational for the many breaks from routine it affords, but sometimes, schedules are soothing!

Also, we all know that hummers in the woods are more exciting than ones in the backyard, right? However, the grassy meadow in Owl Woods teemed with all kinds of interesting summer residents, the most exciting of which was Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Believe it or not, I hadn’t seen one all summer. Not bad as a year bird on September 1.

The mystery of the Long-whiskered Owlet has been resolved as a new ecolodge was built right at the area where the Owlet was first discovered. It has only been seen out of a mist-net in natural conditions the year 2007 and after the creation of an ecolodge in the owlet’s prime habitat, the mystery of the Long-whiskered Owlet has been resolved.

I learned of the trip right as it had been delayed and made a vow that I would be on that ship. The cruise staff seemed utterly confused by us.

An errant Cuckoo that spent the summer near my home in 2013 helped reignite my passion for birding, before, presumably, it returned to warmer climes. In 2013, Dalcio Dacol and I paid a visit to this reserve as part of an independent, month long birding trip in southeast Brazil. It was quite late in the morning when we saw a family group consisting of an adult and three nearly fully grown juveniles right on the track about 300 meters away. What happened next was pure magic.

I am camping in the dry-deciduous jungle in eastern Maharashtra, near the geographic heart of India.

We have finally arrived back home in Broome, but before we left Karratha in the Pilbara region of Western Australia we were lucky enough to see our first Banded Stilt Chladorhynchus leucocephalus for 2013. They are generally found in large open shallow saline water and our encounter was on the coast right near the township of Karratha.

While walking along the beach one morning, I noted a fruiting Dagger Cactus right near the beach, at the top was a bird just destroying one of the purple fruits near the top of plant’s formidable crown.
