First recorded breeding on the island in 2013, this dove is now both widespread and common. Once considered a distinct race of the more widespread Pied Wheatear, it is now regarded as a full species in its own right. Hoopoes are common breeding birds. It was strange to hear it here in Cyprus.

Pied Oystercatcher breeding update

In the case of the two pairs of Pied Oystercatchers that did actually hatch their eggs and have chicks for a few days they did lay once more, but then they failed to even hatch the second clutch and then no longer attempted to breed. One of the surviving Pied Oystercatcher chicks in 2012 made itself famous right here.

With its striking combination of colour rings I suspected that it would be easy to find out more about this particular bird, and I was right. Black-tailed godwits winter in large numbers on the estuaries of both Norfolk and Suffolk, and we know that nearly all these birds breed in Iceland.

They have been here for several months and are currently changing into their breeding plumage and fattening up. It won’t be long and we will watch them fly off into the sunset as they make their journey north to breed. It changes into its breeding plumage and heads off, but has never been seen back in Hong Kong!
