In February of 2013, I wrote a piece outlining my thoughts on which exotic bird species should be added to the American Bird Association (ABA) checklist. In 2014, the Florida Ornithological Society Records Committee (FOSRC) voted to add this species to the Florida state list. They were right! They are excellent parents!

They have been here for several months and are currently changing into their breeding plumage and fattening up. It won’t be long and we will watch them fly off into the sunset as they make their journey north to breed. It changes into its breeding plumage and heads off, but has never been seen back in Hong Kong!

However, there are those species which have a hard time bringing attention to themselves such as Yellow-shouldered Blackbird , Giant Nuthatch , and Vinaceous-breasted Parrot. Regardless of their popularity, these species and the threatened ecosystems they inhabit are equally spectacular. Curassows are such stately birds.

Even in the north of the country we can expect three or four species to arrive by the end of the month, generally Sandwich Tern, Northern Wheatear, Sand Martins and the first singing Chiffchaffs. We have finally arrived back home in Broome, but before we left Karratha in the Pilbara region of Western Australia we were lucky enough to see our first Banded Stilt Chladorhynchus leucocephalus for 2013. It is a species very rarely seen in the north, though they do wander and can show up in a variety of locations.

The Veliko Ratno Island birdlist is about 170 species long, of which more than 90 were observed from the Dorcol Promenade. Highlight species: Ferruginous Duck , Goosander , Red-breasted Merganser , Red-crested Pochard , Greater Scaup , Velvet Scoter , Black-throated Diver. In March and November, Common Cranes are a possibility.

I photographed the first of only two Northern Parulas ever reported in my state, way back in 2013. It was by far my best (and longest) view of this species.

Our only records of Pied Herons in the Broome area since we moved here permanently in 1999 are on 24th June 2006, 22nd February 2011, 6th July 2013 and this week on 6th September 2017. The Black-winged Stilt was a juvenile bird and they are another species that has bred very well around the Broome area this year and now dispersed.
