Birding the humid subtropical Europe

For the majority of species – unless they have a second brood or live higher up in the mountains – by the end of June the breeding season is over and very few birds still sing or bother to defend a territory. A humid subtropical climate sounds like a very good description of what we experience in warm part of the year, but is it true?

What’s up with the Hook-billed Kites?

Most years, there are no more than a few dozen reports of this species across the region. But in 2020 I personally saw thousands of Waxwings in a dozen or so sites, and every one of my birder friends across the country had a similar experience. and Canada, Waxwings are clearly an irruptive species for Mexico.
