Our observations recently have shown that the adult Pied Oystercatchers are roosting amongst the shorebirds where possible and it may well protect the juvenile Pied Oystercatchers. It is almost the same size as its parents and although it has a red bill it remains dark at the tip.

Now the eight of us split into two-man teams, covering the stretch of the Danube River up and down from the rubbish tip. It all started in late January at the rubbish dump in the suburb of Vinca. Betty’s Bay was also a great place to see all of South Africa’s cormorant species, including the endangered Bank Cormorant. We observed far fewer Lesser Flamingos, a near-threatened species.
