I briefly entertained the idea that I had found a rare species never before seen in New York but quickly came to my senses and realized that I was dealing with a leucistic individual. We were driving up to northwestern Michigan from our homes in Ohio (me) and West ByGod Virginia (Geoff) in search of a bird species that would be a lifer for both of us: the Bohemian Waxwing. Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.

Birders know that the light’s not always perfect or even particularly good when you’re trying to tell one species from another. In the only state in the Central Flyway that protects cranes from hunting. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.

The Arenal forests are very good for this species. The fact that one or two families of nunbirds still occur at Luna Nueva is testament to the quality of the rainforest at this site. 140 other species : Despite the lack of a dawn chorus and rained out nocturnal birding, we still managed to identify 140 plus species.
