Stripe-headed Sparrow and Other Dry Forest Birds. Normally found in much drier landscapes at lower elevations, a few of this sparrow somehow found their way to Calle Viquez. These pioneering sparrows share their patch with another dry forest bird, the Lesser Ground-Cuckoo !

I would certainly have to include the all-beige Inca Dove as a regional trash bird, and European House Sparrows are to be found wherever humans are present. All right, I’ll admit that we also have some more drab trash birds as well. Striped female House Finches probably count as well, although the males are often very pretty.

The list starts with those species that are always present: House Sparrows (oh, so many House Sparrows !), My House Sparrows , Weaver Finches that they are, have discovered how to pull tough-but-flexible strips off my banana leaves to weave into their nests. Fortunately, lots of other cute birds were present. These little Tyrant Flycatchers, present from Mexico through Colombia, never fail to charm, with their jaunty crests and characteristic “chewY-chewY!” Oh well, I’ll just have to come back again in another month. Tufted Flycatchers could be poster-birds for cuteness.

The Song Sparrows were wet. And the White-crowned Sparrows were very, very wet. One might think I had already had enough troubles on this outing, but, no, one more problem would present itself. I’m fond of photos of birds in a visible mist or drizzle. But these ones looked almost as bedraggled as I did. I was wrong.

Most of the ground-feeding seed-eaters fit solidly within the Hot Country species, with really large numbers of Stripe-headed Sparrows and Blue-black Grassquits. A Stripe-headed Floof … I mean, Sparrow. In the same way, the only Kingbird present clearly reflected the thorn forest biome, for it was a Thick-billed Kingbird.

Sparrows predominate but there are a host of other species to find and identify. If it’s a good finch year like this year is there is the ever present knowledge that something awesome, like a crossbill or a grosbeak, might cross your field of view. Once I stepped out of the car the sightings piled up quickly: Grasshopper Sparrow , American Kestrel , Savannah Sparrow , Willow Flycatcher , Eastern Meadowlark. And then, only a few yards away, a Henslow’s Sparrow was found singing as well. The sweet song of Eastern Meadowlarks is pleasant enough.

I believe there were also a pair of Hammond’s Flycatchers present on that outing, but can one ever be sure with the Empidonax Flycatchers ? I’m no expert, but I strongly suspect Rusty Sparrows only hunt for grubs when they are feeding babies. These were all nice harbingers of things to come.

Our first stop, at the reservoir surrounded by temperate thorn fores, a lone Least Grebe was present, as was a Belted Kingfisher whose presence I had predicted. Migratory Lark Sparrows were everywhere. The male Ruby-throated Hummingbird I had seen on my last visit is still present, but stayed in deep brush, denying me a photo.

My contact person could not confirm whether birds were present. It took me a good while of studying my photos to determine that most of the few Peeps present were actually Baird’s Sandpipers , and not the Westerns that I had expected. A juvenile White-crowned Sparrow is an expected bird in late fall in New York State but it is always nice when one sits still for a digiscoping session.
