Streaks, Variegations, and Pirates

10,000 Birds

With my recent relocation to the central forests of Trinidad, I have been afforded the incredible opportunity of observing three oft-confused species in close proximity to one another. In reality these species are rarely in the same place at the same time, however! All the more reason to keep birding!

Sunbirds of Sepilok

10,000 Birds

The somewhat shoddily edited Wikipedia entry on sunbirds states that there are 145 species in one paragraph and then talks about 146 in the next. The 1st edition from 1999 was a complete revolution in just about everything, but predominantly the quality and realism of illustrations, showing what a field guide could be and seriously raising the threshold for other publishers. The section with vagrants has been expanded to accommodate more images and longer texts for several species.

The Top 5 Avian Ambassadors of Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

If the avian realm had self-conscious, talking ambassadors, “spokebirds”, which species would partake in birding conferences? Which would travel to tourism conventions, give fun presentations and hand out cultural knick-knacks? The Rufous-naped Wren is a very animated, common species in Costa Rica. Ditto for the Kea.

Rancho Naturalista Lodge, Costa Rica, or in the Land of Coffee and Chocolate

10,000 Birds

Next stops offered White-crowned Parrot and Barred Parakeets , Chestnut-sided and Canada Warblers , Collared Aracari , half a dozen Purple-throated Fruitcrows … I heard a strong double-nock of a huge Pale-billed Woodpecker , but the bird didn’t present itself to our eyes. Next goal: 1100 species, to cover about 10% of the total.
