Such programs are somewhat inefficient anyway – in one study , the breeding success of wild male pheasants was 2-5 times higher than for hand-reared and released ones while for females, hand-reared birds were 3 times as vulnerable to predation as the wild ones. When the land is flooded after rain it will move inland and breed at the ephemeral lakes and raise its young there. During our cool dry months there will be hundreds along the shores of Roebuck Bay and they are also present at the Poo Ponds and the adjoining beach. Once again Pied Oystercatcher breeding season is fast approaching in Broome and we can expect the first batch of eggs to be laid within the next few weeks. Due to the longevity of this species it appears that they are able to maintain their population. They do not react to Lesser Frigatebirds when they are in pairs and breeding.

On the breeding grounds of the north, a small bird flies into the night, takes a bearing for the south, gains altitude and flies onward. If presented with the opportunity, there’s other things that would eat a bird too. Migrant birds make an incredibly perilous journey, twice per year. The equation seems incredible.

There are often large flocks of Terns present and they can be observed loafing around on the rocks and sand when they are not feeding at sea. Silver Gulls are always present on the beach, though the numbers do vary throughout the year. Common Sandpiper. At high tide they can be observed in the caves along the cliff wall in the shade.

The fields near the Tiaozini mudflats look very much like a lunar landscape, but this does not seem to keep a number of species from breeding there, sometimes directly on dirt roads. Out of the approximately 26 species of snipes worldwide, two have been recorded on Trinidad. The trouble begins with the recognition of the fact that both species of snipe were formerly part of a single species – Common Snipe ( Gallinago gallinago ). I am only responding to my subjective impression of a single species’ appearance here; specifically, that of the Bronzed Cowbird. But when raised, they seem to have a sort of weird cape. In other words, they never raise their own young. In contrast, the Brown-headed Cowbird is a same-continent invasive species.

They do not build nests, but occupy old nests of Rooks and breed colonially among them. Red-footed Falcon’s breeding range starts less than 50 mi north of here and I hope that some will choose to join a local rookery and stay. They are quite a rare breeding species in Serbia, declining as we speak, but one pair breeds nearby.

Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. Eventually, I found the lone whooping crane present at the refuge by its call. There are 400 whooping cranes left in the wild, 100 of them in the eastern population.

When we visited the shores of Roebuck Bay in early June there were some lovely flocks of Red-necked Avocets and Black-winged Stilt standing high up on the beach below the cliffs, but they were not the only birds present. Our first stop was Cable Beach to find the Pied Oystercatchers in their territory even though the breeding season is over. There were Pacific Black Ducks, Grey Teal and Hard Heads present and Eurasian Coot swam among them. A short walk found us both species despite the tide being rather low.
