When the land is flooded after rain it will move inland and breed at the ephemeral lakes and raise its young there. During our cool dry months there will be hundreds along the shores of Roebuck Bay and they are also present at the Poo Ponds and the adjoining beach. I had the beach to myself as is often the case and raised my binoculars to observe a lone Little Curlew at the back of the flock of shorebirds. One of the Curlew Sandpipers still has quite a lot of breeding plumage across its breast feathers. There was a huge flock of shorebirds roosting on high tide on 16th September around midday.

Once again Pied Oystercatcher breeding season is fast approaching in Broome and we can expect the first batch of eggs to be laid within the next few weeks. Where the beach has a reef alongside it on the northern section of the beach the pairs stay together throughout the non-breeding season. It is a spectacular and noisy sight.

Next stops offered White-crowned Parrot and Barred Parakeets , Chestnut-sided and Canada Warblers , Collared Aracari , half a dozen Purple-throated Fruitcrows … I heard a strong double-nock of a huge Pale-billed Woodpecker , but the bird didn’t present itself to our eyes. A group (maybe 4-5 ex.)

Such programs are somewhat inefficient anyway – in one study , the breeding success of wild male pheasants was 2-5 times higher than for hand-reared and released ones while for females, hand-reared birds were 3 times as vulnerable to predation as the wild ones. Alas, it seems they were already gone from Tianmashan in March.

On the breeding grounds of the north, a small bird flies into the night, takes a bearing for the south, gains altitude and flies onward. If presented with the opportunity, there’s other things that would eat a bird too. Migrant birds make an incredibly perilous journey, twice per year. The equation seems incredible.

There are often large flocks of Terns present and they can be observed loafing around on the rocks and sand when they are not feeding at sea. Silver Gulls are always present on the beach, though the numbers do vary throughout the year. Common Sandpiper. At high tide they can be observed in the caves along the cliff wall in the shade.

Egyptian Vultures raised is isolation used rocks to crack eggs presented to them. Just a bit of ingenuity can make a big difference for these herons and their progeny if they are breeding. This is similar to the fact that all birds, even first time breeders within a species build identical nests. The behavior was inherent.

Even if we couldn’t find time to raise the bins at a favorite patch, it only takes momentary glances into the sky and hearing chip notes from the trees to remind us that birds are on the move. Barn Swallows were also present along with a few Banks. Migration is happening. Every birder knows it. An abundance of shorebirds.

Fortunately, the very abundant 2018 rains raised the water level to heights I had never seen, and so far, that seems to be making up for this year’s poor rains. Oddly, I saw no Snowy Plovers, even though these apparently breed by the lakeshore. The west half of the lake is never more than a few feet deep. All Wigeons.

I mentioned last week t hat the large Pied Oystercatcher family that had successfully raised three chicks this year for the first time may soon become a smaller family group. On Thursday there was only one juvenile Pied Oystercatcher present and somewhat distant to its parents. It won’t breed for more than 7 years.

They do not build nests, but occupy old nests of Rooks and breed colonially among them. Red-footed Falcon’s breeding range starts less than 50 mi north of here and I hope that some will choose to join a local rookery and stay. They are quite a rare breeding species in Serbia, declining as we speak, but one pair breeds nearby.
