Of course, I’m speaking of the mysterious Wood Stork , Mycteria americana , the only representative of that famous family to regularly occur north of the Mexican border and present in large numbers along the northern coast of South Carolina, where I found myself a couple weekends back. This is a bird with some pedigree.

By age 2 she could identify over 10 species of birds in our Johannesburg, South Africa, yard by call alone. Astounding because she picked up birding before she could speak and surprising because this ability was definitely not inherited from anyone in my family, myself included. This was a pleasant surprise if only because I’m so used to the more technical views presented in his field guides. Also, I wish I could use the tiny birds for my own presentations. They portray the nesting cycles of Mallard, Red-tailed Hawk, and American Robin, illustrating the various ways in which birds create families.

Black-winged Stilt near and on the highway There are still over forty species of birds to be found along the highway across Roebuck Plains, but the tall vegetation can be problematic. There are several Swamp Harriers that upset the birds and then you do find there are more species present than are initially visible.

I tried to get a better idea of what exactly the definition of cuckoo-dove is but am still not very clear about it – Wikipedia only offers the rather formal definition “any of several species of bird in the genera Macropygia , Reinwardtoena, and Turacoena of the pigeon family.” But I may well be wrong.

It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. Eventually, I found the lone whooping crane present at the refuge by its call. Birders know that the light’s not always perfect or even particularly good when you’re trying to tell one species from another. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.

We had observed 40 bird species by the time we reached Katherine and then Grant had some work calls and emails to deal with. There is an isolated population of this species in the Katherine area and they were bouncing around a park in town. Plumed Whistling-Ducks and Magpie Geese. Black-winged stilt.

The most common species are two types of honeyeater, the New Holland Honeyeater , a small black white and yellow species, and the larger Little Wattlebird. This noisy species is often heard throughout the park. Also present are the large Red Wattlebird.
