I chose the name Malimbe Tours because the first bird I ever set eyes on through a pair of binoculars was one of our dazzling malimbe species. I have trained young guides and have also discovered new and important birding sites that are now actively enjoyed by birders from all over the world. It was a fantastic experience.

Why does this little Screech Owl look so horrified? We receive nestling owls who have been fed nothing but hamburger, whose bones are so brittle from lack of calcium that they break when they try to stand. And they would realize that any species whose young tried to nurse with a pointed beak would be a short-lived species.

We started our Singapore bird list at Pasir Ris and leaving the train station we were delighted to see several Cattle Egrets on the grass and several photographers. We encountered several bird species there including a Yellow-rumped Flycatcher and a nesting Red-breasted Parakeet. Sunda Scops Owl. Yellow-rumped Flycatcher.

It’s a lucky day when a birder can visit this exciting region because such a wide variety of species are possible, especially so in sites like Cano Negro that blend wetlands with rainforest. In a couple days, we probably identified around 185, maybe even 190 species. Crested Owl. for its kind. Chestnut-colored Woodpecker.

I had never seen this species of kite before, but Guhin explained that they often hunted in the natural acres of the reserve. The ES NERR is a world-renowned biodiversity hotspot, drawing birders from around the country and around the globe, all happy to see as many of the over 200 species recorded here as possible. After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”. If a baby bird at this stage is taken to a rehabber, it’s waste of the rehabber’s time and the chicks will miss valuable training from their parents. Owls are a little different. Have a small amount of Singaporean dollars to pay for taxis, trains and drinks. The birding is not exceptional, but you can easily see some of Singapore’s and South-east Asia’s more common species and it does throw up the occasional jewel. Spotted Wood-owl. Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.

Phoebe Snetsinger was an American birder who first passed the 8,000 species mark. Before leaving the safety of the car I heeded the park’s advice and checked for animal tracks belonging to any biting, gnawing, mauling, trampling, stabbing or disembowelling species. She died in a car accident during a birding trip.

While the species favors forested hills at moderate elevations ( source ), there are no hills at all here at Nanhui, so maybe these individuals are outcasts or just eccentrics.
