The most recent report was issued in December 2019 and it used data from the 2016 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation. Every few years, the U.S. million birders.

Whenever I get my hands on a trade publication for any industry, my favorite thing to do is see what is being advertised in the magazine. I get one called The Wildlife Professional for the Wildlife Society, that’s put out for wildlife technicians who work in the field. And the weapons don’t stop there.

Research by the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust has shown that predation by Foxes (of both eggs and chicks) is one of the most serious factors limiting the success of nesting Curlews. It is surrounded by a Fox-proof fence No one seems quite sure how many pairs there are today, but my guess would be between 20 and 30.

After reading a glossy celebrity paper – maybe about an Oscar celebration – the eBird reviewer gets back to writing short descriptions of birds but still has the vocabulary of the magazine in his or her head. Recognizing its value for eco-tourism and biogeographical research, it is essential to conserve this magnificent bird.

This week’s guest blog was written by Linda Hufford, who has been a wildlife rehabilitator specializing in raptors for over twenty years. The Moustached Kingfisher was known by only three samples– one female “collected” in the 1920’s, the other two females “collected” in the 1950’s, according to an Audubon Magazine article.

Collins Birds of the World is “ a must for the travelling birder ,” as the BBC Wildlife Magazine reviewer has put it. And I cannot agree more. But I have to disagree with the publisher, HarperCollins, calling it an “ all-encompassing new field guide” – it is a world checklist and I say it with a lot of respect.

Based on analysis of other information (magazine subscriptions, Facebook “likes,” field guide sales, organizational memberships, etc.), I have previously written about the U.S. I believe that FWS wildly overestimates the number of birders.

TE is practiced by state and federal wildlife managers; but municipal TE needs to happen if the annihilation of native wildlife is to be significantly slowed. This reminds me that the saddest part of this whole kerfuffle isn’t that Ted Williams’ work might no longer appear in the pages of Audubon Magazine.

I greatly enjoyed reading these articles on diverse topics such as suet, nyjer seed, the development of humming-bird feeders, rarities at feeders, wild bird feeding in Latin America and the Caribbean, and, importantly, “funding for birds and wildlife.” It’s about packaging, marketing, distribution, transportation, and lobbying.

Talking to Jan Södersved the editor of the Birdlife Finland magazine Linnut whilst we were both in Portugal in early October suggested that all of the owl species in Finland had had a very productive breeding season. Short-eared Owls do breed in Britain but every few years an ‘irruption’ of the like we are seeing occurs.
