Here are some things I’ve learned from the Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Caribbean by Scott Weidensaul: The Burrowing Owl is the only North American owl species where the male is larger than the female, albeit, only slightly larger. I stuffed it in my pocket and decided to take it to Richard Oehlenschlager at the Science Museum of Minnesota. Oehlenschlager apologized that he couldn’t say the exact species of bat. Who cares, the fact that he could narrow it down to 2 species was quite amazing to me. But the jawbone…that was from a bat!

To my disappointment the biggest and most visible species I saw was the introduced Common (Ring-necked) Pheasant , and my first lifer was the equally introduced Gray Partridge. And a more determined birder could have come away with far more, especially earlier in the spring: the park’s checklist numbers over 200 species.
