They might be regular in South Texas but not in Costa Rica. On both trips, a large group of feeding birds tantalized in the distance but they were just too far to see well. We wondered if it might be taking advantage of some food source in that area to molt. Tailless or not, we were pleased to see this uncommon bird. Plain Chachalacas.

Last week, we quite impulsively jumped in a rental car and drove 2600 miles round trip to south Texas to pick up 34 new species. It just so happens, that there were some pretty decent priced flights out of Tucson, so Jeanne booked a couple of tickets, and then had to beat it back home from Texas. This is the local Red Legged Thrush.

The small group was a good counterpart to the large, convivial ABA Safari group of 98 birders. That’s a lot, and the organizers of the safari did an excellent job of creating an environment that offered small group birding during the day and a birders party every night. I am a birder, after all.

In the past, seeing some of these Ring-necked Ducks would have been rather scarce, so here is a shot of the small group that were on the larger pond. So, we were off and away to Dalhart, Texas, and the Rita Blanca Reservoir. We had no real plans to go to Texas, but the last report from Rita Blanca was very impressive.
