We had a pair of Brahminy Kites positioned rather nicely on beach debris as they considered their next fishing trip out onto the reef. They are extremely good at flying low and collecting fish from just below the surface, but the shorebirds still feel threatened by them and they do sometimes take them.

This 90 acre lake, managed by Arizona Fish and Wildlife is about a 45 mile drive from Tucson, and 9 miles from Mexico, as the Chihuahuan Raven flies. The layout of the lake has many small fingers that provide shelter, shallow water and many dense areas of Willow and Cottonwood trees.

There are plenty of lookouts and shelters, but there is no drinking water available at the toilet facilities, so you need to carry plenty of water. We encountered a Grey-headed Fish Eagle flying through the area, which kindly landed in a tree and allowed for photography! Grey-headed Fish Eagle. It proved to be a good decision.

One of the sheltered bays on Isla Isabel. These mangroves function as a sanctuary for fish and other animals that then make their way as adults across the channel to the coral reefs that surround the island. It was made a National Park in the 1980s and is a major breeding and nesting area for over 30,000 seabirds.

Two highlights of the walk back were a bright green Greater Green Leafbird and a Lesser Fish Eagle following the road above our heads. On the way down we were able to look at tribal graves in the cliff and rest in a pool under a waterfall – one with small fish that groom swimmers (your mileage may vary!). Did I mention them?

On a second visit I spotted a fishing boat going east along the channel followed by over a hundred gulls and terns, including over 40 Black Terns. Many birders left at the first drops, but I crowded with a few other birders under the shelter of the volunteer kiosk. These were winter birds, due to fly north any day.

The bay itself is fairly large and sheltered from the elements, and one of the larger rivers draining the Main Ridge Forest Reserve empties into the bay on the northern end. There are a lot of small sheltered bays along the coast and you can choose to walk along the beach or promenade. On the sheltered side of several jetties I came across small groups of up to seven Hoary-headed Grebes bobbing along. The sea is shallow in most places, hence all of the jetties, and the water is very clear. Feeding frenzy.

The distance around the lake is approximately five kilometres and there are limited places to shelter if a storm approaches fast. Some of the sheltered areas were being used by the Chestnut Teal as a roost. As you can see in the photo the lake was pretty rough and all of the birds that were on the water were really bobbing up and down.

The sheltered bays of the Coromandel are home to another endemic, the Southern Merganser. This fish hunting duck ranges from the northern tip of New Zealand to the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands (after which it was first named) but is common nowhere. It certainly has no known relatives.
