Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe today announced as part of Great Outdoors Month the agency is proposing to expand fishing and hunting opportunities on 21 refuges throughout the National Wildlife Refuge System. National wildlife refuges provide premier outdoor recreational opportunities across the Nation.

Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia is one of the premier marine wildlife destinations in the world. The trip was a day one, with the boat leaving the dock early in the morning and a brief stop on the way among sheltered inner reef waters to test our snorkeling skills. Whale sharks are amazing! A lizardfish of some kind. Giant clams!

Water quality was good that day, and we could perfectly see the waving eelgrass, the freshwater fish species, the adorable turtles. In addition to interesting fish views, the glass-bottomed boat tour and clarity of the spring in general provided an unparalleled opportunity to see diving Double-crested Cormorants and Anhingas.

This 90 acre lake, managed by Arizona Fish and Wildlife is about a 45 mile drive from Tucson, and 9 miles from Mexico, as the Chihuahuan Raven flies. The layout of the lake has many small fingers that provide shelter, shallow water and many dense areas of Willow and Cottonwood trees.

Its amazing to me that there are still places on earth where wildlife is blissfully unafraid of humans. It comes as no surprise that this was one of Jacques Cousteau’s favorite places and he filmed the area and its wildlife extensively for his tv series. One of the sheltered bays on Isla Isabel.
