Tawny Frogmouths breeding again

We are very lucky that here in Broome we have Tawny Frogmouths right in town. I didn’t hang around, but took a few photos to capture the Tawny Frogmouth family that has once again bred close to home. I walked slowly around the tree and then left them to have a quiet day in the park before they go hunting at night.

Birding in a Refinery

Last visit we enjoyed superb views of a trio of Masked Cardinals , interrupted by the arrival of a Green Kingfisher that was so intent on hunting, it hardly even cast an eye in our direction. While enjoying the family of Wattled Jacanas , a female Green Kingfisher flew in to an overhanging branch and sat there for several minutes.

Broome’s Poinciana trees

As the Poinciana trees lost their leaves we suddenly “lost” our family of Tawny Frogmouths. We were very pleased to find the Tawny Frogmouth family had not relocated too far! Their parents really do have plenty of hunting to do, but having got them to this stage of development they must be doing something right!

What’s Going On

I’m no expert, but I strongly suspect Rusty Sparrows only hunt for grubs when they are feeding babies. A very vocal (though not too visible) family of Steller’s Jays turned up, which was a shock, because here in central Mexico I had never before seen this conifer-loving species below 2900 m (9500 ft).
