I would have known this right away if I was up to date on my Alexander Skutch. We saw a smaller member of the potoo family, Northern Potoo , Nyctibius jamaicensis , at Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, boating and birding the Salado River. This living ball was so small, we all thought it was a Little Tinamou, Crypturellus soui.

Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. The White-cheeked Partridge is classified as Near Threatened.

I’m not sure if I already was claustrophobic , or if the circumstances merely traumatized me to the point I became one, right there and then. As if this wasn’t enough, we also managed to see, distantly, a family of White-crowned Hornbills , one of Borneo’s rarest hornbills. A Bat Hawk hunting bats.
