Roosting Great Potoo and Crested Owls! During our visit, one was sleeping high in a tree right next to the parking area. Centro Manu has those too, best of all, a pair of incredibly easy Crested Owls. Hopefully, Centro Manu guide and birder Kenneth will keep track of these and other roosting owls, several species are possible.

Around midnight, I heard the most emphatic grunting right outside my window–unexpected because I was on the second floor. Near as I can tell, that horrific “huahhh” was coming from a Barred Owl apparently as confused about its evening’s itinerary as I was. Hopefully, you’re still finding surprises.

Fortunately, late June is the right season for the locally brewed snake-cold Vergina lager in the deepest shade by some gull-filled beach. Dalmatian Pelicans and Eurasian Spoonbills were flying above the beach, sometimes above the hotel garden, while Golden Oriole and Scops Owl could be heard. Now, I am done.

At least most of the resident species can still be seen right along the road, you just have to keep an eye out for cyclists and vehicles on their way up and down the volcano. Either way, its all good, its still birding and if you try it in the right places on Poas, the avian treats will delight you.

I might have to add the Dallas airport staff to the list of things Buffon was right about. I was high and happy, not from “420” drugs but from the altitude and the anticipation of seeing woodpeckers and owls I had never seen before. I flew into Denver from Mexico. We stopped at Rosie’s Diner. I can recommend it.

But in 2020 I personally saw thousands of Waxwings in a dozen or so sites, and every one of my birder friends across the country had a similar experience. Which tours saw the most roosting owls? This odd nocturnal creature is around the same size as a Barred Owl. I savor the timeless experience of scanning these tropical waves for storm-petrels and lost jaegers. As it learns to hunt and live on its own, the young bird has taken up residence in a tree right in front of the farm.

In an interesting experiment featuring a stuffed model of a Collared Scops Owl , Crested Goshawks arrived when hearing the mobbing call of Light-vented Bulbuls that they use when encountering such a scops owl, but not when hearing other mobbing calls. On the plus side, it looks rather funny when wet.

I’ll still probably try again next June, as this June has been the driest and hottest in memory, and in my experience, summer rains make it much more likely that one will see the Sinaloa Martin. This female Streak-backed Oriole is the rightful nest owner. As it happens, there were no Martins to be found that day.
