Yet, these very qualities are what make them so difficult to see as birders, and in my years of birding I had managed to spot just two: the Snowy Owl (which is active during the daytime) and the Barred Owl. Back in November a small group of lucky shorebird surveyors found a Burrowing Owl sitting tight on a jetty on the south side of Masonboro Inlet in southeastern North Carolina. Fast forward to late February when a birder re-found the little owl, perched up upon the rocks in precisely the same place birders had left it in November.

As I opined in my post back in 2010 (and continue to preach) the Western Burrowing Owl needs a conservation plan. A pair of Burrowing Owls fledged six young! After all, the Western Burrowing Owl is listed as “ Climate Endangered ” by the Audubon Society. In the summer of 2015 our investment paid off.

It was dark when we reached our accommodation in the hillside village of Pachna, where we were greeted by a duet of Scops Owls. According to the taxonomists, these weren’t regular Scops Owls ( Otus scops ) but the endemic Cyprus Scops Owl ( Otus cyprius ). The song is highly distinctive.

Most likely, both parties are right. The HBW entry on the Collared Scops Owl is disappointingly short, given that this is an extremely cute and attractive bird and that the entry is attributed to 9 (!) Given the small size of the owl (23-25 cm), the eBird characterization as a medium-sized owl is also a bit strange.

Along with the Sedge/Grass Wrens Ignacio had reported, he had also posted some fine photos of a Great Horned Owl that had roosted on his property. I hardly ever see owls, except for Ferruginous Pygmy Owls , so this was another big draw for me. That’s 100% Barn Owl butt, right there.

Owls begin migrating through Nanhui in the second half of September. My favorite species is the Oriental Scops Owl , a small owl that can be almost invisible if given the right motivation (e.g., I just included this Oriental Dollarbird to show that the bird is indeed blue(ish) in the right light. Roosting Great Potoo and Crested Owls! During our visit, one was sleeping high in a tree right next to the parking area. Centro Manu has those too, best of all, a pair of incredibly easy Crested Owls. I’m not a great imitator of birdcalls, but Pygmy-Owls (both Mountain and Ferruginous ) are easy to imitate, and can draw in all sorts of birds — not just the owls themselves. Look to the right… A bit more to the center… There, just right. His reaction was most unusual. I feel brilliant!

After a lot of backing and forthing, the vendor accepted our offer and the wood is to become a trust to be protected in perpetuity.
