As I opined in my post back in 2010 (and continue to preach) the Western Burrowing Owl needs a conservation plan. A pair of Burrowing Owls fledged six young! After five years of waiting and watching, we were so elated with this news of a successful breeding at the preserve that we applied for another grant from Audubon California.

Along with the Sedge/Grass Wrens Ignacio had reported, he had also posted some fine photos of a Great Horned Owl that had roosted on his property. I hardly ever see owls, except for Ferruginous Pygmy Owls , so this was another big draw for me. That’s 100% Barn Owl butt, right there.

Snowy Plovers also breed half an hour north of my home, so we have those in common. That’s me on the right. He seems to be my Northern (Mountain) Pygmy-Owl whisperer. The muted colors of Blackburnians, Black-throated Greens, and Blackpolls fit right in with the dull greens and golden highlights of the early fall vegetation. Bank and Barn Swallows also migrate through in huge numbers, maybe even the majority of the individuals of these common species that breed in North America.

The Chestnut Bunting is quite a beauty, particularly when seen from the right angle. As mentioned in a previous post, October is the best month to see owls here at Nanhui. A scan to my west with the dawn light behind me revealed a Snowy Owl sitting behind some beach vegetation, way down the beach. And, sure enough, I was right to think that the corvid that had been dive-bombing the owl looked big: it was a Common Raven and now it was flying along the boardwalk right past me!

To properly assess owls, other night birds, and the dawn chorus, you really have to be out and about by 4:30. Pre-dawn birding for us on October 8 gave four owl species, a Common Potoo (not so common), and then a host of species right at and just after dawn.

Unfortunately we have only ever seen dead Barn Owls in the Broome area and one day it would be nice to see a bird hunting over the land. I spotted a Eurasian Wigeon amongst the American Wigeon right out of the gate, but that wasn’t the best sighting of the day. Being winter, this bird is in non-breeding plumage with more brown upper parts and lacking the white face it acquires in its aternate (breeding) plumage. In the summer, they can be found in their transitional breeding plumage (shades of gray and brown) all over the tundra feeding on localized forbs and willow plants. Areas of mixed-coniferous and mixed-deciduous forests can yield the secretive Northern Pygmy-Owl. This species is an athletic and patient one. Super cool stuff!

Horned Larks breed widely over North America, including up here in the High Arctic. Here they are a common breeding bird, one of our two species that migrate from here to Europe and then south. At the same time (and sometime the same location) we have Semipalmated Plovers breeding, which makes identification a challenge.

The other notable impact of the March weather was on some of our seabirds, many of which return to breeding cliffs and islands in March prospecting territories and nesting ledges for a few days in their thousands before pitching back out to sea to feed. By the end of a day, the best bird was the White-tailed Eagle that caught and ate a fish right in front of us – a species they have seen in the UK only once. Pygmy Cormorant – winter (it breeds in Serbia, but overwinters in Belgrade). Goosander and Red-breasted Merganser – Belgrade in winter; otherwise, the first one breeds in Serbia.

Most of the breeding birds returning here will arrive within the next 10 days to two weeks. Right now it is almost all male birds, staking out territories, filling the tundra with song. Breeding is well underway and everywhere you look the Glaucous Gulls are, ahem, engaged or collecting grasses and sedges for nests.
