Scouting can also turn up rare birds, fruiting and flowering trees, and maybe even an owl roost.

I also missed easy birds like Snowy Owl and Swainson’s Warbler. Bicknell’s Thrush is a bird that is important to me because I grew up in New York’s Catskill Mountains, one of the places that it breeds. The logistics for a big year can leave you in situations with surprising misses. Thanks so much.

A Great Backyard Bird Count Miracle Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of January 2011) What is the International Bird Rescue Research Center Anyway? They reach breeding maturity at four to seven years of age, produce only one chick per nesting season, and only one in three offspring survive to fledging age. Isn’t that neat?
