Even photos of the rarest of birds can be found, even heart-wrenching images of bird species that are no longer with us. The fleeting photo of an Ivory-billed Woodpecker tugs at and flies away with a piece of the heart, that final image of a Slender-billed Curlew is difficult to look at, it’s a stab deep inside.

For some reason that is hard for me to fathom, there is no such bird as a Cape Woodpecker. In fact, this is probably a species that has substantially expanded its original range through the pet shop route and the resulting escapees. The HBW describes the species as “striking”, which is well deserved.

Rochester is still wintry, but bird activity among the common species has picked up quite a bit. My best sighting was a Hairy Woodpecker puffed up to fight the cold. On Saturday he dragged his family to the Adirondack Mountains to see a stake out Great Gray Owl in Keene, a first for all three in the family.

I noticed plenty of species I hadn’t seen all winter, but was most surprised by an energetic Northern Mockingbird. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was either of a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers that he saw at the Ramshorn Livingston Sanctuary in Catskill, New York, while he was on a walk with his family.

These arid hills, cloaked in a mosaic of deciduous scrub and desert vegetation, form a northern outpost for several Neotropical species while also harboring several key endemics and southwestern Nearctic species. I really wanted to see Gray-crowned Woodpecker and Military Macaw , and I managed to succeed on both counts.

My family took our annual post-Easter Egg hunt hike at Powder Mills Park, where I spied several gorgeous matched pairs of Wood Ducks along with lots of different woodpecker species.

Although relatively common here they’re notoriously difficult to see well – a phenomenon clearly not unique to this species ! These irruptive visitors to T&T always are a pleasure to experience. A Lineated Woodpecker banged its head against a dry branch. I was thrilled to see a Short-tailed Hawk fly in.

So much so that the two species are placed within their own family, Chaetopidae. The species is insectivorous and nests amongst the scree and boulders on the steep mountain slopes. And then there are the Ground Woodpeckers ! These are one of only three ground-dwelling woodpeckers in the world.

There wasn’t much around, and aside from a lifer Yellow-bellied Bulbul the two most impressive species were heard not seen – a Blue-headed Pitta an a Banded Kingfisher. The highlight again happened before we left the camp, a family of Crested Firebacks. An oversubscribed night drive didn’t help. A tick is a tick.
