It is hard to imagine any birder not liking woodpeckers – they are the “motherhood and apple pie” of the avian world. The Bearded Woodpecker (Mkuze, South Africa) does not really look any more bearded than many other woodpeckers. It is the most widespread woodpecker in Africa, claims the HBW.

Sadly, the HBW states that the species is “almost extinct in some areas in China owing to hunting and trapping for the cagebird trade and taxidermy” The Maroon Oriole looks much more interesting, though my photos do not really do it full justice. This Great Spotted Woodpecker isn’t even trying to hide its spots.

When we got there, it was still too dark to distinguish species feeding in the canopy. Cocoa Woodcreepers are the largest species of woodcreeper on the island and are much more often heard than seen.

Monterrey Meetings

Acorn Woodpecker and Black-crested Titmouse were plentiful and confiding. Amazingly, everyone showed up at dawn except for one person, who’d had a near-death experience with me on Colombia’s Sumapaz paramo, an acceptable excuse for a no-show. The day was only minutes old and we already had 32 species on the day list.

I’m accustomed to seeing nothing while walking along some of these trails, but apart from a Golden-olive Woodpecker knocking the trunk of a palm tree at the entrance, it seemed extra quiet. I’m sure in many of my accounts on this blog this species appears in the early paragraphs. Even the bugs were scarce! In the distance.
