Crossing the Cook

The Cook Strait can be windy and choppy as all get out, and I’ve heard one horror story of a boat crossing in storm seas, spending five hours trying to thread the needle and get into the Marlborough Sounds, give up, and then head back to Wellington. Not a species I have seen myself yet, but it is on my list.

In 2022, the 10,000 Birds eBird Collaborative submitted 1,837 checklists from 9 countries ( Australia , China , Costa Rica , Mexico , Saint Lucia , Serbia , Trinidad and Tobago , United Kingdom , and the United States ) and observed 1,273 species. The Collaborative life list increased to 4,140.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of November 2020)

Nonetheless, November can really cook when the birding conditions are just right. I finally chased down what has been a nemesis species for me at Webster Park, which seems to be one of Rochester’s most reliable winter finch hotspots. They are also easily his Best Bird of the Weekend. How about you?

Additionally, there are still a few regularly-occurring Pacific pelagic species that I have never seen. My lists totaled 35 species, but I did not see everything in the harbor and someone discovered a Manx Shearwater after-the-fact by reviewing photos. Miriam’s is a plain, simple place offering delicious local cuisine cooked in a wood oven, combined with an awesome birding station! more than two dozen species before the rain forced us inside. Highlands biom) got me 189 bird species observed, 65 lifers among them, together with 10 mammal species / 6 lifers.

Travel to Tiquicia for birding is high on the list of most birders because it’s not too far from Canada or the USA, there is good tourism infrastructure, and most of all, it’s pretty easy to see hundreds of eye-catching bird species.
