You truly cannot experience the Gray-barred Wren without hearing the raucous calls shared among group members of this highly-social species. I also used to hear wild-collected caged Solitaires in suburban neighborhoods, but am delighted to report that that terrible practice seems to have mostly disappeared.

In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers. I ran back to grab Andrew, and we were soon watching this large jay busily going about its routine of collecting food and flying off (presumably to a nearby nest).

Suddenly in the middle of the soybean fields there was a group of Lesser Rheas that were approaching the road. We stopped and observed this first group of adult Rheas that seemed quite comfortable with us and the road traffic. Moments later we spotted a second group of 20 adult and young Rheas running across the field.
